Brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba) is a multi-branched short-lived perennial, and sometimes a biennial, depending on its environment. It has a bushy appearance and dark red stems with white hairs mostly along the upper half of the plant. The alternate ovate leaves are also roughly textured with stiff little hairs. The upper stems terminate to 1 - 2 flowerheads, each consisting of 6 - 12 yellow ray florets that surround a brown to black flattened central cone. RUDBECKIA (CONEFLOWER):
Rudbeckia is a genus of flowering plants that gets it common name, coneflower, from its distinguished, raised central disc that comes in shades of black, brown, or green. They are all native to North America, and mostly perennial plants but there are some species that are annual/biennial. They are very common in native gardens for their showy yellow flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. Most of the species have been well known to be used by Native Americans, and are rich in phytochemicals that may offer potential pharmaceutical or other medicinal uses.
