Description

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) is a biennial, but it will easily self-seed after blooming onto open soil. Its stems and scattered oval leaves are covered with hairs that give it a rough texture. A well known wildflower of prairies and meadows because of its large 2 - 3 inch wide yellow flowers with dark centers that form at the tops of its stems. It is easy to grow, and with a prolonged blooming period, it greatly attracts butterflies and other pollinators. RUDBECKIA (CONEFLOWER):

Rudbeckia is a genus of flowering plants that gets it common name, coneflower, from its distinguished, raised central disc that comes in shades of black, brown, or green. They are all native to North America, and mostly perennial plants but there are some species that are annual/biennial. They are very common in native gardens for their showy yellow flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. Most of the species have been well known to be used by Native Americans, and are rich in phytochemicals that may offer potential pharmaceutical or other medicinal uses.
