Tradescantia bracteata - Prairie Spiderwort
Prairie Spiderwort (Tradescantia bracteata) is a stout, unbranched, short perennial. It has grass-like foliage, and at the stem tops are several lavender flowers with 3 petals and 6 stamens tipped with bright yellow anthers. As with other spiderworts, the blooms are open during the morning, and close mid-day to avoid the heat from the sun and conserve energy. It is similar to Ohio Spiderwort, but it is smaller and has fuzzy flower sepals where as Ohio Spiderwort's are smooth.
