Elymus virginicus - Virginia Wildrye
Virginia Wildrye (Elymus virginicus) is a tall cool-season prairie grass and is very adaptable to various soil moisture habitats. It is a fast growing native grass and will spread once established by self seeding. Its foliage grows to one foot and its much taller seedheads are initially green and turn brown along with foliage in the fall. Its flowering structures and seedheads are generally upright that resemble those of wheat. Studies have shown that it can produce up to 400 pounds of seed per acre in a calendar year.

ELYMUS (WILDRYE):
Elymus is a large genus of about 150 different species of grasses that grow in tufts and spread by rhizomes. Its name comes from the Greek word elyo, "rolled up," due to the grain lemma and palea being tightly rolled around the seed. Wildrye grass is primarily used as forage for livestock and forms skinny, bristly spikes that can also be a showy addition to an ornamental flower garden or arrangement.
