Elymus canadensis - Canada Wildrye
Canada Wildrye (Elymus canadensis) is a fast-growing, cool season prairie grass that matures in mid-summer. It establishes easily to provide a quick initial cover, and requires little to no maintenance. It produces showy seedheads with long bristle-like awns, similar to barley, that often curve outward unlike Virginia Wile Rye which is more upright. Canada Wildrye will mature in the first or second year while other prairie grasses and wild flowers are still developing.
