Bouteloua gracilis - Blue Grama
Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis) is a perennial grass that grows in small clumps and produces blue-green seedheads that suspend horizontally at the end of each stem. Foliage turns golden brown with orange-red hues in the fall. This is among the shortest of the native ornamental grasses, and the most drought-tolerant native turf grass. It can survive with as little as 7 inches of rain annually, and the taller you let it grow, the less water it will need because its roots will be shaded.

The two most important species are Bouteloua curtipendula (Side-oats Grama) and Bouteloua gracilis (Blue grama) which played a major role in the native North American shortgrass prairie that once covered the drier portions of the Great Plains.
